This Is Where Wings Got Their Swagger

Chicken wings became famous in Buffalo, New York in the 1960s at the Anchor Bar, where the now-classic combo was born: crispy wings tossed in hot sauce and butter. What was once a throwaway cut became a legend.

Americans eat over 1.4 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday alone.

That is more wings than people on Earth. Several times over. Poultry madness.

Sauce is not the star. Skin is.

Crispy rendered chicken skin triggers fat salt and crunch receptors in the brain simultaneously. It is engineered pleasure without engineers.

Wings are one of the few foods people eat with zero dignity.

Sauce on face. Fingers destroyed. Napkins abandoned. Social rules suspended.

Chicken wings weren’t always popular.

For decades, wings were basically scraps — cheap, unwanted, and often thrown away before Buffalo wings made them famous.

Buffalo wings are younger than the Super Bowl.

They were popularized in the 1960s, after the Super Bowl era began. A modern classic.
